Welcome Note to Registered Players with Important Information:

2020 Northwest Catholic CYO Football Welcome

Congratulations for registering your son to play with the Northwest Catholic Saints this fall.  As you know the CYO is the only faith-based football program available to kids.  We think it’s the finest program available.  Your son will be introduced to many life lessons that he will carry with him though out his life including hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, overcoming adversity and how to conduct himself has a Christian gentleman.  We look forward to having the chance to work with and develop your son.

At this time the CYO is continuing to conduct Fall Sports Programs.  We are continuing to monitor the situation. If things change, we will let you know. All fees are full refundable if the season is cancelled.  Rest assured we will implement all the proper procedures to keep your child safe.

We have a couple of off-season optional workouts to prepare your child for the upcoming season. We have a Tuesday and Thursday Cross Fit workout and our Annual All Sports Conditioning Camp.  These are optional workouts but encourage your child to participate to get the most out of the upcoming season. Information on both camps can be found on ‘Summer Activities and Camps’ page on our website.

The Cross Fit work is currently running through Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 23,2020. There is a $25 Fee and waiver form required to participate.

Next is the Northwest Catholic, All sports conditioning Camp open to children in grades 3rd-8th.  This is a non-football specific program that is offered one week before the first week of practice.  We find it a great way for kids to get a head start on the conditioning that is necessary to be a successful athlete. The camp is held at Our Lady of Sorrows Athletic Field August 3rd to August 7th  at 6:30pm-8:00pm. The cost is $40, and you can register at www.nwcatholicfootball.com.  You must register by July 15th in order to receive a camp tee-shirt.

Football Equipment will be distributed during the conditioning camp on August 4th-7th by grade level.  Your specific day and time will be provided in a separate communication. In order to receive your equipment, you must have a physical form signed by your doctor dated after 4/15/2020 to be eligible to take your equipment home and participate in any practice. You will also need a check made payable to OLS Athletics for $150.  This is a refundable equipment deposit. If the equipment is returned in good order, the check will be returned to you uncashed at the end of the season.  There will be a couple of other forms that require a hard copy signature distributed as well.  Without both the properly signed physical form and a $150 check, we will not be able to issue the equipment.  Please also complete the concussion awareness form and cyo participation form.  Having all of your documentation in order will make for a smooth start to the season. Any Necessary Forms can be found on our website under Downloadable Forms Page.

We will strictly enforce the need for a valid physical form for any child to participate in ANY practice activity. Your son will not be allowed to practice if we don’t have a valid physical form.

Northwest Catholic will provide most all the equipment you need to participate (helmet, shoulder pads, practice and game uniforms, standard mouth guard).  Your son will need to purchase a football girdle with the pads included (available at most sporting goods stores), football spikes, socks and athletic cup. Some parents especially those whose children have braces may want to purchase their own mouthguard. Additional pads or gloves are optional.

The first day of practice will be August 10th at 6pm-8pm. Practices will be 5 days a week and 2 hours in length before the first game towards the end of August. After the first game the practices will be reduced to 4 days a week for Varsity and 3 days a week for JV and Freshman. Once School starts the practice time will be reduce to an hour and half. Practices will be held at both Our Lady of Sorrows Athletic Field and Catholic Central High Schools back athletic practice field located off 12 Mile Rd. Specific dates will be assigned for each location as the season progresses.  If your son will be missing practice, we ask that you notify the head coach as soon as possible.

There will be a specific progression for the first week of practice. The first two days will be just shorts, tee shirts and helmets; shoulder pads will be added the 3rd day; and the 4th day will be full practice uniforms. Reminders will be provided along with the practice schedules.

The SI Play app that can be downloaded for Apple and Android phones will be the best source of information for practices and game scheduling. Once you download the app, you use your same user id and password that you use to register your child on nwcatholicfootball.com website. As we get closer to the season the practice and game schedules will be loaded into the app.  The app will also have easy communication methods for coaches and other team members.

Games will be scheduled once per week during the season. We typically will have a 4-way scrimmage on Saturday prior to the first game of the season. I believe this may be Aug 22, 2020.  Games will be once per week thereafter leading up to the CYO Championship game held at Ford Field October 17th, 2020. The Detroit Archdiocese has mandated that we have no Sunday games this year. Therefore, games may have to be scheduled on days other than Saturday or Sunday due to game field availability. Most home games are typically scheduled at Catholic Central High School. This may vary from time to time.  The CYO does not release game schedules until after practices have started. We will communicate the schedules as soon as we receive them.

Football is a volunteer intensive sport. We will need a lot of parent participation to make this season a success. Its been our experience that involvement by the parents improves both parents and players experience.  We will ask that every family sign-up for volunteer slots as required.  Julie Boardman will be the Coordinator; she will need a team parent for each team and a concession coordinator working with her to make sure everything goes smoothly.  Please step up and volunteer and assist Julie and her team whenever asked.  This year we will require each family to sign up for a few slots once the game schedules are released. It will be responsible to switch or find a substitute if you cannot meet that assignment.

We are currently looking for two volunteer coordinators: One to coordinate Game Day Concessions for the 3-4 home games and the other to assist with some practice field preparation such as periodic assistance with lining the field and goal post set up.  We will be also looking for a team parent for the Freshman and Varsity Teams.  Please step up and volunteer for one of these positions. Contact Nick Kallas or Julie Boardman to volunteer.

Our volunteer coaches will be as follows:

Varsity – Brandon Werts (bwerts75@icloud.com), Rick Genrich, Scott Truman, Chris Filliatraut, John Cuschieri

JV – Nick Kallas (nkallas94@gmail.com ), Steven Arnold, Chris Brower, Adam Wehner, Alberto Sandoval, Nick Card

Freshman – Jim Harrington(j.harrington@fiegerlaw.com) , Mike Bojaj,  Bob Binck, Vincent Kuebler

We hope to have a fun and exciting season. Our measure of success is if your son wants to come back and play again the following year. We do our best to balance hard work and fun throughout the season. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Nick Kallas
